2023 Heroes and Legends

Dr. Chester Chang
Aviator
“Not Just Flying Around”
– By Joy Han (15)

What sets Chester Chang apart is his life outlook, which ultimately contributes to his success. He truly embodies the values in understanding, adaptability, and most importantly, commitment. He was one of the most selfless and thoughtful people I’ve known; it’s quite fascinating. Additionally, there’s his value of learning and teaching, constantly bettering himself and others.

Emile Mack
Retired Los Angeles Fire Chief
“Legacy Beyond Professional Achievements”
– By Joo Won Kim (16)

Emile’s legacy, beyond his professional achievements, lies in his humility and dedication to family. The decision to adopt Miya from Korea symbolizes a continuation of the love and resilience instilled by his adoptive parents. In the end, Emile emerges not just as a hero for Korean Americans but as a figure of inspiration for all of Los Angeles—a testament to the transformative power of compassion, understanding, and the pursuit of a better future for everyone.

Gloria Kim
Zion Missionary
“An Angel with Many Wings”
– By Gyubin Kim (16)

Gloria’s mission is fascinating and admirable, but from a receiver’s perspective, Gloria is undefinable. One individual goes as far as referring to Gloria as her mom by saying, “Thank you, Mom.” This may seem eccentric to the rest of society, but for someone who doesn’t have anyone or anything, having someone who cares enough to devote their life to providing is a blessing. Therefore, through Gloria’s warm and kind spirit, she fills in the role of being a guardian for many.

Tia Legoski
Founder of HAPA
– By Daniel Kim (16)

Tia played a pivotal role in fostering connections among Amerasians and played a key part in unraveling the lifelong mysteries surrounding their heritage. Her efforts highlight the profound importance of understanding and embracing one’s identity and cultural roots. Witnessing Tia’s dedication and impact prompted me to reflect on the value I place on my own identity, origin, and, perhaps most significantly, the unwavering support of my family during challenging times.

Ruben Hernandez
President of UDLA
“The Man Who Brought Light to the Darkness”
– By Ashley Ham and Matheus Koo (16)

Delving into an exploration of Ruben’s life reveals not just a tale of triumph, but one that vividly underscores the profound resilience embodied by Ruben Hernandez. His multifaceted roles as a devoted father, a loving husband, an inspiring role model, and an influential leader have not only empowered our community at large but have left an indelible mark on my own personal journey. The encounter with him served as a guiding light, steering me onto a path adorned with bravery, compassion, and wisdom, elements that have profoundly shaped me into a better friend, daughter, and individual.

Teddy Choi
Youth Development
“It’s Just the Beginning”
– By Daniel Kim (16)

Teddy envisions his continued efforts as a steppingstone for second- and third-generation Korean Americans, urging them to enter the political arena and amplify the political influence of the Korean community. He sees this as a vital response to combat discrimination against Asians, firmly believing that increased representation is key. With a wealth of fundraising experience and deep-rooted connections in both politics and the Korean community, he is hailed for possessing a keen sense of realistic politics.

So Hyun Chang
Writer
“Unveil What’s Hidden in Plain Sight”
– By Ashley Ham (16)

So Hyun Chang’s life and career have not only provided the Korean American community with a sense of belonging and relatability but also given me a chance to peek into such a unique and intricate world of writing. His story shows his never-ending passion and dedication while exploring the intricacies and complexities of humans in the face of conflicts. Furthermore, his journey and the legacy he has built over time leave a positive and important mark that exemplifies his identity as a Korean American. The experiences he went through are woven so neatly with his emotions and words in the novels and plays that provide a space for our community as well as in literature, to relate on a deeper level.

Jin Rok Wi
First KBS Announcer
“Dear Listeners, this is My Story…”
– By Celine Hong (16)

The journey of this remarkable individual, from humble beginnings to becoming a pioneering announcer and voice actor, unfolds as a tapestry woven with resilience and determination. Navigating through the complexities of a changing world, he faced challenges head-on, leaving an indelible mark on the broadcasting industry and becoming a testament to the triumph of self-belief.

Dr. Suzie Oh
Retired School Principal
“My Way of Teaching Is…”
– By Olivia Cha (16)

The values she instills, such as the importance of communication and inclusion, have left a lasting impact on my perspective as an aspiring educator. Dr. Oh’s legacy not only influences the broader educational landscape but has also contributed to my personal growth and aspirations in the field of education. As we celebrate and recognize her achievements, it is essential to see that Dr. Suzie Oh’s legacy is a beacon that serves to guide other educators to create an inclusive, equitable, and thriving education system for youth.

Angela Killoren
CEO of CJ ENT America
“A Compassionate Mother, Wife, and Seasoned Professional…”
– By Eugene Cho (16)

Angela isn’t just a businesswoman; she’s a compassionate mother, wife, and seasoned professional. In her professional realm, she’s devoted to managing a global phenomenon that celebrates Korean music (KCON), film, and other entertainment brands worldwide. Her impact transcends borders, propelling Korean culture onto the world stage. Intrigued by her stories, I was eager to delve deeper.

Dr. Monica Ryoo
President of FKLAC
“Just Coloful as Passionate”
– By Joy Han and Loren Sun (16)

It’s no secret that Dr. Ryoo is a genuinely good person. This is evident not only in her medical career but also in her writing. She shares not just knowledge but also her voice, conveying meaningful messages to her readers. She particularly values the importance of humanity and social justice in education, which motivated her to create the FKLAC program. These accomplishments extend beyond her medical career, positively impacting hundreds of people. With this, she is undoubtedly rich, yet she still finds the time and power to contribute to societal improvement outside of her lucrative career.
